About the Griffin Design

Griffin - A mythical beast, the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle - Just as this hybrid beast possesses the most beneficial features of the king of the air and king of the land .... The Griffin Kite possesses a design which gives the responsiveness, jumps and performance of the c style kites with the security of the currently popular 'flat' style kites.

• Shape changing, breathable kite allows the airfoil to change foil section increasing the range of the kite.

• Flow attachment is increased preventing airfoil from stalling

• Reactive Foil Section

The most efficient flying machines, eg albatross and other bird which spend extended time in flight all have the characteristic of being able to change their aerofoil to maximise their performance in relation to the prevailing conditions.

They do this by changing the angle of attack of their foils (wings). Having a centre strut inhibits the ability to do this.

Evolving kite structure by removing the centre strut the Monkey kite design can ‘breathe’ and flex just as a bird wing does to give the greatest efficiency available. This gives the kite aeroelasticity. Allows the design to have more ribs at the tips – where they deliver greater airflow providing increased performance at the bottom and top end of the kite range. This delays stalling behaviour at the bottom end increasing your kites wind range.

Not having a centre strut removes excess weight from the kite which increases performance due to less drag

When the kite is dropped in the water it rolls onto its back and is much more stable and easier to relauch.

• Valves – non return function on struts allow you to pump up the struts hard without having to pinch the valves. A deflation tool is attached to each valve to make a quick getaway easy.

• Pump leash attachment point at centre of LE

• Monkey DNA Unique serial number for QC and theft prevention

• Shock Proof Construction – Design of canopy construction takes into account that all fabrics fatigue and stretch over time. By having a curve in the canopy layout, a large percentage of the cyclical stress the kite is placed under when loaded for flying and the intense stress of crashes are dissipated through a integral shock absorber running laterally through the canopy design.

No flies on the Monkey – Hydrophobic and sand shedding materials

Specially made polyester ripstop for the canopy 52g/m2

Super Durable Dacron 160g/m2

Bumpers –

Why we don’t have thick bumpers like some other kites. Bumpers are an unnecessary placebo feature that adds weight, drag and cyclical fabric tension to the canopy. Bumpers are what we like to call ‘kite fluff’ have a look at your kite when it is on the beach. You will not see on any kite the ‘bumper’ coming in contact with sand etc. They perform no useful purpose. We have deliberately evolved them out of our design.

Trailing edge of the kite

Leach lag free - Some kites have a line sewn into the seam at the trailing edge. All fabrics stretch under load and at different rates. Leach lines do not stretch at the same rate as canopy fabrics and cause ‘ballooning of the canopy over time and wear on the trailing edge as a result. We have evolved the leach line out of our construction as it serves no function purpose.

Reinforced trailing edge – Some kites do not have a leach line for the same reason as us but they choose to reinforce the trailing edge with another material. This causes the same issues

Twin Fold Toughening (TFT)

We use a double fold of self fabric of the canopy with a zig zag stitch to give the same beneficial effect of reinforcement without the associated issues of stretch differential creating tension, drag or adding weight.

Wing Tips

• Dacron – Super Tough Tips – reinforced double layer wing tips to withstand wear from self launching

Gives you options to control the performance and feel of your kite
At leading edge we have power and depower setting where the angle of attack of the kite can be adjusted. To depower use the foremost point and to power up use the point closes to the centre of the kite.

Back we have faster and slower turning

Fast at trailing edge and slower turning at the centre

OSB – Our oversized TPU bladders are made from a chemically superior polymer. They are oversized which means they do not ‘pop’ and cause blow outs because the bladders never expand to a point when they are under stress
